Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.

The psalmist gives us not only the command to give thanks but the reason behind it: for He is good. All true gratitude finally rests here, on the character of God. We do not give thanks merely for pleasant circumstances, which come and go; we give thanks because God Himself is good, and His goodness does not change with our weather. And the psalm adds a second, steadying reason: "His mercy endures forever." His goodness toward us is not a passing mood but an enduring, unfailing mercy that outlasts everything.

This anchors gratitude on something firmer than our feelings or fortunes. On a day when circumstances give us little to be cheerful about, we can still give thanks, because the Lord is good, and His mercy endures forever, regardless of how today is going. The grateful heart learns to look past the gifts to the Giver, and to find, in the unchanging goodness of God, a reason for thanks that no bad day can take away. The whole psalm goes on to recount God's deliverances, urging again and again that the redeemed "give thanks to the Lord for His goodness."

Before you weigh up today's reasons to be glad or sorry, settle the deepest one: He is good, and His mercy endures forever. Give thanks for that.

Take Into The Day

Ground your gratitude today not in your circumstances but in God's character. Whatever kind of day it is, give thanks deliberately "for He is good, and His mercy endures forever", a reason for thanks that no bad day can remove.

Prayer

Lord, I give thanks to You, for You are good, and Your mercy endures forever. When circumstances give me little reason to be cheerful, anchor my gratitude in Your unchanging goodness. Help me look past the gifts to You, the good Giver, and give thanks. Amen.
