As this month on God's promises closes, we come to the hand that lays hold of them: faith. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Faith gives substance, a present reality and firmness, to what God has promised but we do not yet possess. The promise is real, but it lies in the future or the unseen; faith reaches out and grasps it now as solid, treating God's word as good as done before it is seen. To the eye of faith, the promise is already substance, already evidence, because the God who gave it cannot fail.

This is how all the promises we have considered this month become ours in experience. They are objectively secured, "Yes and Amen in Christ", but faith is what lays hold of them and lives on them now. Faith does not create the promise; God did that. Faith simply takes God at His word, treating what He has said as more certain than what we can see. The whole chapter that follows this verse is a portrait gallery of people who did exactly that, ordinary believers who staked their lives on God's promises and were not disappointed.

So take everything you have learned this month and put it to use through faith: grip God's promises as present substance, and live on what He has said. Next month we turn to the response all this should awaken, a heart rooted in gratitude.

Take Into The Day

Choose one promise of God and, by faith, treat it today as present substance, as good as done, rather than a distant maybe. Live this day as one fully persuaded that what God has said is more certain than what you can see.

Prayer

Father, faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Give me such faith, to grip Your promises as present and certain, and to live on Your Word more surely than on what my eyes can see. I take You at Your word today. Amen.
