This promise is often misquoted as though it read, "Get what you want from the Lord." But its real shape is far better. Delight yourself in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. The promise has a condition, and the condition does the deep work: delight yourself in the Lord. As we make God Himself our delight, finding our joy in Him, treasuring Him above His gifts, something happens to our desires. They are reshaped. The more we delight in God, the more our hearts begin to want what He wants, and the more our deepest desire becomes God Himself.

So the promise works in two beautiful ways. First, as we delight in Him, God grants us new desires that are aligned with His will, and gladly fulfils those. And second, the deepest desire of a heart that delights in God is God, and Him we are always given, in full. The verse is not a technique for using God to get our wishes; it is an invitation to find such joy in God that He becomes our chief desire, and to discover that this desire, above all, He delights to satisfy.

Make God your delight today, not merely the route to your wishes. Delight in Him, and let Him reshape and satisfy the desires of your heart.

Take Into The Day

Today, seek to delight in God Himself, not just in what He can give you. Spend a few minutes enjoying who He is. As you do, notice your desires being reshaped, and trust Him to satisfy the deepest desire of all: more of Him.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to delight in You, not merely to use You to get what I want, but to find my joy in You Yourself. Reshape my desires to match Your will, and satisfy the deepest desire of my heart, which is You. Be my delight today. Amen.
