Three times in two verses the psalmist repeats the word preserve, the Lord keeps, guards, watches over His people. "The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in." The repetition is like a hand laid three times on a worried shoulder, a steady reassurance that we are watched over, kept, guarded by God in all our comings and goings, from now and "even forevermore."

We must understand this promise rightly. It does not mean believers never experience harm or hardship, Scripture and experience both show otherwise, and this same God leads His people through deep waters. The deepest preservation promised here is "He shall preserve your soul", your truest self, your eternal life, kept safe in God whatever befalls your body or circumstances. Within God's loving care, nothing can touch us that has not passed through His hand, and nothing can finally harm the soul He keeps. We are watched over by a God who never slumbers nor sleeps, whose eye is on us going out and coming in, all our days.

Go out today under the watchful keeping of God. He preserves your going out and your coming in, and your soul is safe with Him forever.

Take Into The Day

As you go out today and return home tonight, consciously place your "going out and coming in" under God's promised keeping. When anxiety about safety or the future rises, rest in this: He preserves your soul, and you are watched over by a God who never sleeps.

Prayer

Lord, You promise to preserve me, my going out and my coming in, and above all my soul, from this time forth and forevermore. Watch over me today, God who never slumbers. Whatever befalls me, keep my soul safe in You, and quiet my fears with Your faithful keeping. Amen.
