Israel was trapped, the sea before them, Pharaoh's army thundering behind, no way out and no power to save themselves. In that impossible corner, Moses spoke this promise: The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace. Notice the striking division of labour. God's part: to fight. Their part: to hold their peace, to be still, to stop their panicked striving, to trust. The battle that they could never win was not theirs to fight; it was the Lord's.
There are times when the right response to an overwhelming situation is vigorous action, and Scripture commends that too. But there are other times, when we are truly powerless, cornered, out of our depth, when the call is not to strive harder but to "hold our peace" and let God fight. Much of our exhaustion comes from trying to fight battles God never assigned to us, battles only He can win. The promise here is that God Himself takes the field on behalf of His helpless people. Our striving adds nothing; our stillness is not laziness but faith.
Is there a battle today that is too big for you, one only God can win? Hold your peace, and let the Lord fight for you.
Take Into The Day
Identify a battle you have been exhausting yourself trying to fight, one truly beyond your power. Today, deliberately "hold your peace": stop the panicked striving, hand the battle to God, and trust Him to fight for you.
Prayer
Lord, when I am cornered and powerless, You promise to fight for me while I hold my peace. Forgive my exhausting striving in battles only You can win. I hand this one to You now. Fight for me, and help me be still and trust. Amen.
