Rest for the Weary

Jesus issues an open invitation with a promise attached, and it is addressed precisely to those who feel they cannot go on: Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. He names two kinds of exhaustion, those who labour, worn out by effort and toil, and those who are heavy laden, crushed under burdens they carry. To both, He does not say "try harder" or "carry better." He says "Come to Me," and promises rest as His gift: "I will give you rest."

This is striking because rest is something we usually try to manufacture for ourselves, a holiday, a quiet evening, a break from the demands. But the deep rest Jesus offers is not a technique or a location; it is a Person. "Come to Me." The rest is found in coming to Him, bringing our weariness and our burdens to the One who invites us. And it is a gift, not a wage, we do not earn rest by becoming less tired; we receive it by coming, tired as we are.

If you are weary and burdened today, the invitation is for you, and so is the promise. Come to Him, not when you have rested up, but now, as you are, and receive the rest He gives.
