James 1:5
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

James makes a promise tailor-made for our moments of bewilderment: if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God… and it will be given to him. Notice the honest starting point, "if any of you lacks wisdom." James assumes we will often lack it; wisdom for life's tangled situations is exactly what we run short of. And his remedy is beautifully simple: ask. Not study harder first, not figure it out ourselves, but ask the God who is the source of all wisdom.
Two phrases make this promise especially generous. God "gives to all liberally", abundantly, freely, without stinginess; He is not reluctant to part with wisdom. And He gives "without reproach", He does not scold us for needing to ask, does not make us feel foolish for our lack, does not say, "You should have known that by now." Many of us hesitate to ask God for help because we expect a reproach; James assures us there is none. God welcomes the request and answers it generously.
Where do you lack wisdom today, a decision, a relationship, a problem with no clear answer? Do not muddle through alone. Ask the God who gives generously and without reproach, and trust the promise: it will be given.
Take Into The Day
Where you feel out of your depth today, a tangled decision or a problem with no obvious answer, stop and simply ask God for wisdom, expecting Him to give it generously and without scolding you for needing to ask. Then watch for His answer.
Prayer
Father, I often lack wisdom, and You promise to give it generously to all who ask, without reproach. So I ask now for wisdom in what I am facing. Thank You that You will not scold me for needing it. Give me Your wisdom, and help me act on it. Amen.
