This is one of the most loved and most misunderstood promises in Scripture, so we must hear it carefully. Paul does not say that all things are good, they are not; some things are genuinely terrible, and the Bible never asks us to pretend otherwise. Nor does he say that each thing, taken alone, is good. He says that all things work together for good, that God, the master weaver, takes all the threads of our lives, including the dark and painful ones, and works them together into a good design. The individual threads may be black; the finished tapestry is beautiful.

And the promise is specific in its scope: it is "to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." This is a family promise, for those who belong to Him. And we should let Scripture define the "good" it aims at, the very next verse tells us: to be "conformed to the image of His Son." The ultimate good God works toward is not necessarily our comfort or ease, but our becoming like Christ. With that in view, even our sufferings are not wasted; in the hands of a sovereign and loving God, they are woven into our good.

Whatever painful thread is in your life today, you can trust the Weaver. He is working all things together for good.

Take Into The Day

Take the hardest thing in your life right now, and without pretending it is good in itself, entrust it to the God who works all things together for good. Trust the Weaver with that dark thread, believing He is weaving it into your good and your likeness to Christ.

Prayer

Father, You work all things together for good for those who love You, not because each thing is good, but because You are the wise Weaver of every thread. I bring You the painful thread I am holding. Weave even this into good, and make me more like Your Son. Amen.
