Jesus has just told His anxious hearers not to worry about food, drink, and clothing, the basic provisions of life, because their heavenly Father knows they need them. Then He gives the great promise with its great condition: seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. The "all these things" are the very necessities He has been speaking of, daily provision. The promise is not that those who seek God's kingdom will become rich, but that they will not have to anxiously chase after their daily needs, for those will be "added" as they pursue something higher.
The condition is the key word "first." It is a question of priority, of what we seek before all else. Most of us are tempted to seek provision first and fit God in around it; Jesus reverses the order. Put the kingdom of God and His righteousness in first place, He says, and trust your Father to take care of the rest. This is not a formula for getting wealth by pretending to be spiritual; it is an invitation to reorder our lives around God, freed from the anxious grasping that consumes those who put provision first.
What is in first place in your seeking today? Put the kingdom first, and trust your Father with the rest.
Take Into The Day
Examine what you are seeking "first" today, provision, security, success, or the kingdom of God. Deliberately reorder it: put God and His righteousness in first place in your priorities and prayers, and trust your Father to add what you need.
Prayer
Father, teach me to seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness, and to trust You to add what I need. Forgive me for putting provision first and fitting You in around it. Reorder my seeking today, and free me from anxious grasping. Amen.
