Paul anchors the believer's hope of eternal life in a single, staggering phrase: it was promised by "God, who cannot lie." Not God who chooses not to lie, not God who usually tells the truth, but God who cannot lie, for whom falsehood is an impossibility, contrary to His very being. Our greatest hope rests on the one thing in the universe that absolutely cannot fail: the truthfulness of God. And He made this promise "before time began", it is older than creation itself, settled in eternity past.
There is profound rest here for the soul that fears the future. Our hope of eternal life is not wishful thinking or a comforting story we tell ourselves; it is a promise from the God who cannot lie, made before the world existed. The whole weight of our eternal destiny hangs on God's incapacity for falsehood, and there is no safer place to hang it. If God could lie, we would have reason to tremble; but He cannot, and so our hope is secure.
When fears about the future or eternity press on you today, rest them on this: your hope was promised by the God who cannot lie.
Take Into The Day
When fear about your future, or eternity itself, surfaces today, anchor it to this truth: your hope rests on the God who cannot lie. Let the impossibility of His falsehood give your soul rest.
Prayer
Father, my hope of eternal life rests on You, the God who cannot lie, who promised it before time began. There is no safer ground for my soul. When the future frightens me, settle me on Your perfect truthfulness. My hope is secure in You. Amen.
