Having spent three chapters describing all that God has made us in Christ, chosen, adopted, redeemed, raised, sealed, Paul turns, with a single word, to how we should now live: "I therefore… beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called." Everything turns on that "therefore." Our behaviour is to flow from our identity, not the other way round. We do not behave well in order to become God's chosen, accepted children; we live well because that is already who we are.

This is the right order, and it is the fitting close to a month on identity. The Christian life is not "try harder to earn an identity"; it is "live out of the identity you have already been given." A child of the King is called to walk like one, not to win the title, but because the title is already theirs. Knowing who you are in Christ is not the end of the matter; it is the foundation for how you now walk. The indicative ("you are") always grounds the imperative ("now live").

So take all you have learned this month about who you are, and let it shape how you walk today. Be who you are. Next month we turn from who you are to what He has promised, the rock of His Word to stand on.

Take Into The Day

Take one identity-truth from this month that struck you most, and let it govern how you walk today, not to earn your standing, but to live out of it. Be, in your actions, who God has already made you in Christ.

Prayer

Father, You have made me Your chosen, accepted, redeemed child in Christ. Now help me walk worthy of that calling, not to earn it, but to live out of it. Let who I am in Christ shape how I live today, to the praise of Your glorious grace. Amen.
