Jesus, the Good Shepherd, makes a promise about His sheep that is meant to settle the trembling heart: "I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand." Notice where our security rests. It does not rest on the strength of the sheep's grip on the Shepherd, sheep are weak, prone to wander, easily frightened. It rests on the strength of the Shepherd's grip on the sheep. We are held in His hand, and the next verse adds that the Father's hand is over His; we are doubly held.

This is the deep comfort of belonging to Christ. The question is not whether your hold on God is strong enough, for it often is not, but whether His hold on you is strong enough, and it is. The forces that would love to snatch you away are real, but they are no match for the hand that holds you. The God who set His love on you, chose you, redeemed you, and sealed you with His Spirit is not going to lose you now. He keeps what is His.

When fear whispers that you might slip away, look at whose hand is holding you. You are held by the Good Shepherd, and no one can snatch you out.

Take Into The Day

When fear whispers today that you might somehow slip away from God, look not at the strength of your grip on Him but at the strength of His grip on you. Rest in the Shepherd's hand, from which no one can snatch you.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You hold me in Your hand, and the Father's hand is over Yours; no one can snatch me away. When I fear my own weak grip, remind me that my security rests on Your hold, not mine. Thank You, Good Shepherd, that You keep what is Yours. Amen.
