A Member of the Body

1 Corinthians 12:27
Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.

Our identity in Christ is never merely individual. Paul says, "you are the body of Christ, and members individually", each believer is a distinct part, but a part of a body, joined to all the others and to Christ the Head. To be in Christ is to be incorporated into something larger than yourself: a living organism, the church, in which you have a place, a function, and a belonging that you cannot have alone. You are not a stray hand or a detached foot; you are a member of the body.
This speaks to the deep human longing to belong, and to the modern loneliness of trying to follow Christ in isolation. You were not saved to be a solitary believer, self-sufficient and unattached. You were joined to a body, needed by it, and needing it. Your gifts are for the others; their gifts are for you; and together you form something none of you could be alone. The eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you." In the family of God, you belong, and you are needed.
Do not try to be a Christian alone today. You are a member of the body of Christ, find your place in it, and take it.
Take Into The Day
Resist the drift toward solitary faith today. Reach out to one member of Christ's body, to encourage, to serve, or to be served. Take your place in the body, remembering you are needed and you belong.
Prayer
Father, in Christ I am not a solitary believer but a member of His body, joined to others and needed by them. Forgive my drift toward isolation. Help me take my place in Your church today, using my gifts for others and receiving theirs, as part of the one body. Amen.
