A Citizen of Heaven

Paul writes to a city proud of its Roman citizenship, a status that brought privilege, protection, and belonging, even though Rome was far away. He takes that familiar idea and lifts it higher: our citizenship is in heaven. For the believer, our truest home, our deepest belonging, our governing allegiance, is not here but in heaven, where Christ reigns. We live here as citizens of there, resident, for now, in a country that is not finally our own.

This reframes how we hold our life in this world. A citizen of heaven does not despise the earth, but neither does he sink all his hopes into it. He lives here as something of a foreigner, never quite at home, because home is elsewhere. This explains the restlessness every honest believer feels, the sense that we do not entirely belong, that this world cannot finally satisfy. We are not meant to feel fully at home here; we are citizens of heaven, "eagerly waiting" for our Saviour to come from there. Our homesickness is not a flaw; it is a compass.

When this world disappoints you today, remember it was never your true country. You are a citizen of heaven, waiting for the King.
