Paul addresses the Corinthian believers, a notoriously messy, quarrelsome, immature church, as "those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints." That is remarkable. He does not call them sinners hoping to improve; he calls them saints, holy ones, set apart for God. And he does so not because their behaviour was impressive (it often was not), but because of their position "in Christ Jesus," in whom they were sanctified, set apart, made holy.

This corrects a quiet lie many believers live under: that "saint" is a title for the spiritual elite, the heroes of the faith, while ordinary strugglers like us remain merely sinners. But the New Testament routinely calls all believers saints, not because we have arrived, but because in Christ we have been set apart as God's holy people. We are saints who still struggle with sin, not sinners who occasionally manage a little holiness. Our truest identity is not our remaining failure but our God-given holiness in Christ.

Stop introducing yourself to your own heart as "just a sinner." In Christ, you are a saint, set apart, holy, belonging to God. Live up to the name He has given you.

Take Into The Day

Stop labelling yourself "just a sinner" today. In Christ you are a saint, set apart for God. When tempted to act beneath that identity, remind yourself who you now are, and live up to the name God has given you.

Prayer

Father, in Christ You have sanctified me and called me a saint, set apart and holy, not because of my record but because of my position in Him. Help me see myself as You do, and to live today up to the holy name You have given me. Amen.
