Paul reaches for the image of a seal. In the ancient world, a seal marked ownership and guaranteed authenticity, a king would press his signet into wax to show that a document was genuinely his and under his protection. So, Paul says, when you believed, God "sealed" you "with the Holy Spirit of promise." The Spirit's presence in you is God's own mark of ownership stamped upon your life: you are genuinely His, and you are under His protection.
The next verses call this seal a "guarantee," a down payment, the Spirit given now as the first instalment and pledge of the full inheritance to come. This speaks powerfully to the believer's security. Your belonging to God does not depend on the strength of your grip on Him, which wavers, but on the seal He has placed upon you, which holds. The God who began the relationship has marked you as His own and given His Spirit as the guarantee that He will see it through to the end.
When you doubt whether you really belong to God, remember the seal. You have been stamped with His Spirit, the pledge that you are His, and will be kept.
Take Into The Day
When doubt whispers today that you might not really belong to God, remember you have been sealed with His Spirit, His mark of ownership and His guarantee. Rest your security not on your grip on Him, but on His seal upon you.
Prayer
Father, when I believed, You sealed me with Your Holy Spirit, Your mark of ownership and Your guarantee of all that is to come. When I doubt that I belong to You, remind me of Your seal. Thank You that my security rests on Your hold, not mine. Amen.
