Ephesians 2:5
…even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved).

Paul gives the bleakest possible diagnosis of our former condition, and then the most glorious cure. The diagnosis: "dead in trespasses." Not sick, not weak, not struggling, dead. A dead person cannot improve, cannot revive himself, cannot contribute anything to his own resurrection. That is what we were, spiritually, apart from Christ. And the cure matches the diagnosis: God "made us alive together with Christ." Resurrection, not rehabilitation. The same power that raised Jesus from the tomb raised us from spiritual death to spiritual life.
This crushes every notion that we contributed to our own salvation. You do not help raise a corpse; you can only stand amazed as life is given. So Paul interrupts himself, almost unable to hold it in: "(by grace you have been saved)." Our new life is entirely a gift, start to finish, the work of God upon those who could do nothing for themselves. We bring the deadness; He brings the life.
If you are in Christ, the greatest miracle has already happened to you: you who were dead have been made alive. Live today in the wonder of resurrection life.
Take Into The Day
Live today in the wonder that you, once spiritually dead, have been made alive with Christ. When you take any spiritual life or hunger for granted, remember it is resurrection, a gift of grace, not your own achievement.
Prayer
Father, I was dead in my trespasses, unable to save myself, and by grace You made me alive together with Christ. Thank You that my new life is entirely Your gift. Let me live today in the wonder and gratitude of resurrection life. Amen.
