On the night before He died, Jesus redefined His relationship with His disciples, and the new word He chose is astonishing: friends. "No longer do I call you servants… but I have called you friends." A servant obeys at a distance, kept on the outside, told only what he needs to know to do his job. A friend is brought into the inner circle, trusted with the master's heart and plans. And Jesus says the proof of this friendship is disclosure: "all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you." He has let us in.

This lifts our relationship with God to a height that should take our breath away. We are not merely God's creatures, not merely His servants, not even merely His children in a formal sense, we are His friends, admitted to His confidence, welcomed into intimacy with the Almighty. The same God before whom angels veil their faces calls those in Christ His friends. Abraham was given this title; now Jesus extends it to all who are His.

You are not God's hired hand, kept at arm's length. You are His friend. Come close today, and enjoy the friendship He offers.

Take Into The Day

Relate to God today not as a servant kept at a distance but as a friend admitted to His confidence. Talk with Him as a friend through the day, openly, warmly, expecting to be let into His heart.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You no longer call me a servant but a friend, and You have let me into the Father's heart. I marvel that the God of heaven calls me His friend. Draw me close today; let me walk and talk with You in the intimacy of that friendship. Amen.
