Colossians 1:21-22

And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled… to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight.

Paul does not soften the description of what we once were: "alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works." Before Christ, we were not merely distant from God by an unfortunate misunderstanding; we were estranged, at odds, turned against Him in heart and action. That is the honest starting point. But over against it stands one of the most beautiful words in the gospel: yet now He has reconciled. The enmity is ended. The estranged are brought home. The enemies are made friends.

And notice who did the reconciling. It was not we who, ashamed of our rebellion, finally made our peace with God. It was He who reconciled us, at His own initiative and cost, "in the body of His flesh through death." We did not climb back to God; God came down to us and bore the cost of bringing us home. And the purpose is breathtaking: "to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight." The former enemy is now to stand before God without a single charge.

If you have ever feared that God is against you, hear the gospel: in Christ, you are reconciled. The war is over. You are His friend.

Take Into The Day

If some part of you still suspects God is against you, lay it down today. In Christ the enmity is over, He reconciled you at His own cost. Relate to Him today not as a wary enemy but as one fully welcomed home.

Prayer

Father, I once was alienated and an enemy, yet now in Christ You have reconciled me, at the cost of His death, to present me holy and blameless before You. Thank You that the war is over. Let me live today as one fully reconciled and welcomed home. Amen.
