Paul follows the logic of family to its astonishing conclusion: "if children, then heirs." In the ancient world, a child was not merely loved but stood to inherit; sonship and inheritance went together. And so Paul says that those adopted into God's family are not only His children but His "heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ." We stand to inherit; and the inheritance is nothing less than all that belongs to Christ Himself, shared with us.
Let us be clear what this inheritance is. It is not first a promise of earthly wealth or comfort; it is God Himself, and the glory of His eternal kingdom. To be an "heir of God" is to be promised a share in everything that is His, His presence, His glory, the new creation, life without end. This is wealth that moths cannot eat and thieves cannot steal, an inheritance "incorruptible and undefiled" reserved in heaven. The poorest believer is richer, in what truly lasts, than the wealthiest person without Christ.
Whatever your circumstances today, you are an heir of God. Live as one who has a glorious inheritance secured.
Take Into The Day
When earthly lack or loss presses on you today, remember what you actually own: an inheritance as an heir of God, a joint heir with Christ. Let the wealth that lasts forever steady you above the wealth that does not.
Prayer
Father, I am Your child, and therefore Your heir, a joint heir with Christ, promised a share in all that is Yours. When earthly lack discourages me, lift my eyes to the inheritance that cannot fade. Thank You that in Christ I am rich in what truly lasts. Amen.
