Paul contrasts two spirits, two ways of relating to God. There is "the spirit of bondage again to fear", the cringing relationship of a slave to a master, always anxious, never sure of acceptance, working to avoid punishment. And there is "the Spirit of adoption," the relationship of a beloved child to a tender father, marked not by fear but by intimacy. And the cry that rises from this second relationship is "Abba, Father", Abba being the warm, familiar word a child uses, closer to "Daddy" than to a formal title.

This is the difference the gospel makes to how we come to God. Religion without grace keeps us slaves, forever afraid we have not done enough, forever unsure of where we stand. But the Spirit of adoption assures our hearts that we belong, that we are loved, that we may climb into the Father's lap with the confidence of a cherished child. The very ability to cry "Abba" is itself the Spirit's witness that we are God's own.

If you have been relating to God in fear, hear this: you did not receive a spirit of bondage. You may call Him Abba.

Take Into The Day

Notice today whether you relate to God as a fearful slave or a beloved child. When fear creeps in, deliberately address Him as "Abba, Father", and come to Him with a child's confidence, not a slave's dread.

Prayer

Abba, Father, thank You that I did not receive a spirit of bondage and fear, but the Spirit of adoption. Forgive me for relating to You as an anxious slave. Let me come to You today with the confidence of a beloved child, secure in Your love. Amen.
