Of all the things we are given in Christ, this may be the most tender: the right to become children of God. John is careful with his words, it is to "as many as received Him," to "those who believe in His name," that this right is given. It is not automatic to all people everywhere; it is the gift God grants to those who receive His Son. But to everyone who does, the door of the family swings open, and they are made not merely servants, not merely subjects, but children.
Think of the gap this bridges. Between the infinite God and us there is a distance no creature could cross. And yet God does not merely permit us to approach as awed subjects; He brings us in as sons and daughters, with all the belonging, intimacy, and inheritance that family means. This is not a status we could ever have earned or demanded, it is a "right" He gave. The Creator of the universe is, for those in Christ, Father.
You are not merely God's creature or God's servant. If you have received Christ, you are God's child. Live today in the security of belonging to the family.
Take Into The Day
Relate to God today not as a distant subject to a king, but as a child to a father. Bring Him the small things, the ordinary things, the way a child comes to a parent. You belong in the family.
Prayer
Father, thank You that to all who receive Your Son You give the right to become Your children, and I am one of them. I am not merely Your creature or servant, but Your child. Let me live today in the warmth and security of belonging to Your family. Amen.
