Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Paul does not say that the one in Christ is an improved version of the old self, or a renovated model with a few upgrades. He says something far more radical: a new creation. The same word used when God made the world out of nothing. To be in Christ is not to turn over a new leaf but to be given a new life, a fresh act of God's creative power, bringing into being something that was not there before. "Old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."

This matters deeply for anyone weighed down by their past. The world says you are the sum of your history, your failures, your wounds, your worst moments define you. But the gospel says that in Christ a line has been drawn, and a new creation has begun. The old you, with its condemnation and its bondage, has passed away. You are not merely forgiven for the old life; you have been given a new one. Your past is real, but it is no longer your identity.

Stop introducing yourself to God, and to your own heart, by the old self. In Christ, you are new.

Take Into The Day

When the old self, old guilt, old labels, old patterns, tries to define you today, answer it: "old things have passed away; I am a new creation in Christ." Refuse to let your past be your identity.

Prayer

Lord, in Christ I am not a patched-up version of the old me but a new creation by Your creative power. Thank You that the old has passed away. When my past rises up to define me, remind me that I am new. Let me live as the new creation You have made. Amen.
