Fruit of the Spirit

By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.

As this month of fruit closes, Jesus lifts our eyes to see what it is all for. The fruit of the Spirit is not, in the end, about our self-improvement or our reputation. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit. The ultimate purpose of love, joy, peace, patience, and all the rest growing in us is the glory of God. When Christ's character ripens in an ordinary life, people see something of God Himself, and the Father is honoured. Our fruitfulness is His glory.

And Jesus adds: "so you will be My disciples." Fruit is the evidence of genuine discipleship. Not perfection, fruit takes a whole season to ripen, and there are always green patches, but real, growing, visible character that marks us out as those who belong to Him. A fruitless profession of faith is a contradiction; the life truly joined to the Vine will, in time, bear the Vine's fruit.

So do not measure this month by how far you fell short, but by the direction you are growing. Keep abiding, keep walking in the Spirit, and trust the Gardener to bring much fruit, for His glory. Next month, having watched His character grow in us, we will ask who this makes us, our settled identity in Christ.

Take Into The Day

Look back over this month not to tally your failures but to notice the direction of growth, where the Spirit's fruit is beginning to show. Thank God for it, give Him the glory, and keep abiding into the new month.

Prayer

Father, You are glorified when I bear much fruit, and fruit marks me as Christ's disciple. Thank You for the growth this month, however small. Keep me abiding in the Vine and walking in the Spirit, that my life may bear much fruit for Your glory. Amen.
