If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Paul brings the whole subject to its practical conclusion. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. The first half states a fact about every believer: we live in the Spirit, it is the Spirit who gave us spiritual life, who dwells in us, who is the very source of our new existence. The second half draws the natural conclusion: then let us also walk in the Spirit, let the Spirit who is our life also be our daily guide, the One we keep in step with, moment by moment, all day long.

This is how all the fruit of this month actually grows. We have looked at love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, and we have seen, again and again, that none of them is manufactured by willpower. They grow as we keep in step with the Spirit, the way fruit grows on a branch joined to the vine. The image is of marching in time, matching our pace to His, neither running ahead in the flesh nor lagging behind in disobedience, but staying in rhythm with the Spirit's leading.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, You are my life; now be my walk. Help me keep in step with You today, not racing ahead in the flesh nor dragging behind, but matching my pace to Yours. Grow Your fruit in me as I stay in rhythm with You. Amen.
