Paul reminds the young, perhaps timid, Timothy of what God has given him, and the list is a gift, not a demand. God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. That last phrase, "a sound mind," carries the idea of self-discipline, of a settled, well-governed inner life. And here is the crucial thing: it is given. Self-control, like the rest of the fruit, is not something we must squeeze out of ourselves by raw effort; it is part of the equipment God supplies by His Spirit.
This is gentle and important. The verse is not a rebuke to throw at people who struggle with fear or anxiety, as if their struggle were simply a failure of willpower or faith, that would be to misuse it cruelly. It is, rather, a reassurance of resource: when we feel timid, overwhelmed, or out of control, we are reminded that God has placed within His people, by His Spirit, real power, real love, and a steadying soundness of mind to draw upon. We exercise self-control not from an empty reserve but from a Spirit-given supply.
When you feel you have no self-control left today, do not just try harder. Draw on what God has given.
Take Into The Day
When you feel timid, overwhelmed, or close to losing control today, pause and remember what God has already given you by His Spirit, power, love, and a sound mind. Draw on that supply rather than relying on your own empty reserves.
Prayer
Father, thank You that You have given me, by Your Spirit, not fear but power, love, and a sound mind. When I feel overwhelmed or out of control, help me draw on what You have already supplied, rather than striving alone. Steady me by Your Spirit today. Amen.
