Paul reaches for the world of the athlete to teach self-control. Everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things, disciplined, self-controlled, willing to say no to lesser things for the sake of a greater goal. An athlete in training does not eat whatever he likes, sleep whenever he wishes, or indulge every appetite; he brings his body and his desires under control, all for a single aim. And Paul's point is pointed: if athletes will discipline themselves so rigorously for "a perishable crown", a wreath that withers within days, how much more should we, who run for "an imperishable crown" that lasts forever?
Self-control, the last of the fruit, often sounds joyless, a long list of noes. But Paul reframes it as the discipline of the goal-driven. The athlete's noes are not joyless deprivation; they are the glad cost of wanting the prize more than the indulgence. Self-control is not mainly about suppressing desire but about being captured by a greater desire. We say no to the lesser because we have said a deeper yes to the greater.
What "perishable crown" is pulling at your discipline today? Remember the imperishable one, and run for that.
Take Into The Day
Practise an athlete's self-control today: say no to one lesser indulgence for the sake of a greater goal. Let the no flow not from grim deprivation but from wanting the imperishable crown more than the passing pleasure.
Prayer
Lord, give me the self-control of the athlete who is temperate in all things for the prize. Capture my heart with the imperishable crown, so that I gladly say no to lesser things. Let my discipline flow from a deeper desire for You. Amen.
