Here is gentleness made wonderfully practical, in the place we most often lose it: our words in a tense moment. A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The proverb observes a simple, daily truth about human conflict. When someone comes at us heated, our instinct is to match their heat, to answer sharpness with sharpness, to defend, to escalate. But the harsh word is petrol on a fire; it stirs up more anger and the conflict grows. The soft answer, astonishingly, has power to turn the whole thing aside.
This takes more strength, not less. It is easy to fire back; it is hard to answer gently when you have been provoked. But gentleness here is not weakness, it is power under control, the strength to absorb a blow without returning it, and in doing so to defuse what a harsh word would have detonated. Many a quarrel, broken relationship, and bitter day could have been prevented by a single soft answer. The tongue holds the power to inflame or to calm.
Someone may come at you heated today. Have a soft answer ready, and watch it turn wrath away.
Take Into The Day
The next time someone speaks to you sharply today, resist matching their heat. Choose a soft answer instead, calm, gentle, non-defensive, and watch it cool the moment rather than inflame it.
Prayer
Lord, give me a soft answer ready for the heated moment. When I am provoked, hold back the harsh word that would stir up anger, and grant me the strength to answer gently. Let my words turn wrath away, not fuel it, today. Amen.
