Before we consider our faithfulness, we must be steadied by His. Paul writes one of the most comforting sentences in all of Scripture: if we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself. God's faithfulness does not rise and fall with ours. When we are inconsistent, wavering, even unfaithful, He does not match our wavering with His own. He remains faithful, not because we have earned it, but because faithfulness is who He is, and "He cannot deny Himself."
This is the bedrock under all our striving to be faithful. If God's commitment to us depended on our commitment to Him, we would all be lost, for we are all, at times, faithless. But His faithfulness is anchored in His own unchanging nature, not in our performance. He keeps His word to us even on the days we fail to keep ours to Him. This is not a license to be careless; it is the secure ground from which faithfulness can actually grow. We become faithful by resting in the One who is faithful to us first.
If you have been faithless lately, hear this gospel: He remains faithful. Come back, and begin again on that solid ground.
Take Into The Day
If you have been inconsistent or unfaithful lately, don't let shame keep you away. Rest today in the truth that He remains faithful even when you are not. Come back, and let His faithfulness be the ground you rebuild on.
Prayer
Lord, when I am faithless, You remain faithful, for You cannot deny Yourself. Thank You that Your commitment to me does not rise and fall with mine to You. On that solid ground I come back to You today, and ask You to make me faithful too. Amen.
