Fruit of the Spirit

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

This verse comes immediately after the famous truth that we are saved by grace, not by works, and that order is everything. We are not saved by good works; we are saved for them. Good works are not the root of our salvation but its fruit and purpose. We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. The word "workmanship" suggests a masterpiece, a thing carefully crafted; God has remade us in Christ with a design and a purpose, and that purpose includes a life of good.

And there is something wonderfully reassuring in the last phrase: these are good works "which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them." Your good works are not random or self-invented; God has gone ahead of you and prepared them, laid them out like stepping stones for you to walk in. There are specific good things appointed for you to do today, people to help, kindnesses to show, works prepared in advance and waiting for you to arrive.

Go out, then, expecting them. Watch for the good works God has prepared, and walk in them.

Go into today expecting to find good works God has already prepared for you, specific people to help, kindnesses appointed in advance. Stay alert for them, and when you see one, walk in it.

Prayer

Lord, I am Your workmanship, created in Christ for good works You prepared beforehand. Open my eyes today to the good works You have laid out for me to walk in. Let me not miss them, but step into each one You have prepared. Amen.
