Before we are called to goodness, we are told the foundational truth of the universe: the Lord is good. Not merely powerful, not merely great, but good, good in His character, good in His intentions, good in everything He does. The psalm sets this down as the bedrock reason for our worship: we praise Him "for the Lord is good." And His goodness is not occasional or moody; "His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations." It does not run out and it does not run down.
This matters more than we often realise, because in our hardest moments the enemy's oldest lie is to make us doubt God's goodness, to whisper that God is holding out on us, that He cannot really be trusted, that behind the difficulty lies a God who is not truly good. The serpent's first temptation was exactly this. To be settled in the truth that God is good is to be armoured against that lie. We can trust Him in the dark because He is good in the dark.
And we cannot reflect a goodness we doubt. Settle this first: the Lord is good. Then go and be good, like Him.
Take Into The Day
When circumstances tempt you to doubt God's goodness today, refuse the lie. Anchor yourself in the truth: "The Lord is good." Trust Him in the dark, and let your confidence in His goodness make you good toward others.
Prayer
Lord, You are good, wholly good, always good, good even in the dark. Silence the old lie that makes me doubt it. Settle my heart in Your everlasting goodness, that I may trust You fully and reflect Your goodness to everyone I meet today. Amen.
