Through the prophet, God names what He actually wants from His people, and it is strikingly down-to-earth: show mercy and compassion, everyone to his brother. The people of Zechariah's day were keeping up an impressive show of religious fasting, but God looked past the ceremony to the way they treated one another, and there He wanted to see mercy and compassion in action. Religion that is real always comes down, in the end, to how we treat the people around us.

"Compassion" is a tender, gut-level word; it means to be moved in the depths by another's need. And "mercy" is compassion in action, kindness shown especially to those who are struggling, suffering, or in the wrong. God is not impressed by religious performance that leaves us hard toward our brother. He looks for hearts soft enough to be moved by others' pain, and hands willing to do something about it.

Look around today for someone who is struggling. Let yourself be moved, and then show them mercy and compassion, not from a distance but up close.

Take Into The Day

Notice someone who is struggling today, and let yourself actually feel for them rather than passing by. Then show practical mercy, a tender word, a helping hand, a refusal to be harsh with someone already down.

Prayer

Lord of hosts, You look past my religion to how I treat my brother. Soften my heart to feel others' pain, and move my hands to show mercy and compassion. Let me not be hard toward the struggling, but tender and kind, as You are. Amen.
