Here Jesus shows us the very source and pattern of kindness: God Himself, who is kind to the unthankful and evil. This is staggering when you sit with it. God's kindness is not reserved for those who appreciate it or deserve it. He sends rain on the fields of people who curse Him, gives breath to those who deny Him, pours out daily mercies on the ungrateful and the wicked. His kindness flows from His own nature, not from the worthiness of its objects.

And Jesus draws the obvious application: we are to be like our Father. The context is loving enemies and doing good "hoping for nothing in return." Most of our kindness is quietly conditional, we are kind to the kind, generous to the grateful, warm to those who warm to us. But the kindness that is the fruit of the Spirit reaches further, to the unthankful and the difficult, because it is modelled on God's. It does not wait to be deserved or thanked; it gives because that is what kindness does.

Is there an ungrateful or difficult person in your life? Show them, today, the kindness God has shown you.

Take Into The Day

Show kindness today to someone who will not thank you for it, the ungrateful, the difficult, even the hostile. Give it freely, hoping for nothing in return, because that is how God has been kind to you.

Prayer

Father, You are kind even to the unthankful and the evil, and that includes Your kindness to me on my worst days. Make me like You. Help me show kindness today to someone who will not deserve or repay it, freely, as You have done for me. Amen.
