Isaiah gives us both the promise and the secret of peace in a single verse. The promise is breathtaking, perfect peace, a peace without flaw or gap. The Hebrew literally reads "peace, peace," the word doubled for emphasis: a deep, complete, settled peace. And the secret is just as clear: it belongs to the one "whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You." Perfect peace is found not in perfect circumstances but in a mind anchored on God.
The phrase "stayed on You" is the key. Our minds, left to themselves, drift to our problems, circling our fears like water down a drain, and the more they circle, the more our peace drains away. The remedy is not to empty the mind but to fix it, to deliberately stay it on God, His character, His promises, His presence. Peace follows the focus of the mind. A mind fixed on the storm is troubled; a mind fixed on the God who rules the storm is kept in perfect peace.
Where is your mind staying today? Move it from the problem to the Person, and peace will follow.
Take Into The Day
Catch your mind today when it starts circling a fear. Each time, deliberately move it, "stay" it, on something true about God instead. Practise fixing your mind on Him, and let His perfect peace follow.
Prayer
Lord, You keep in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on You. Forgive me for letting my thoughts circle my fears. Help me to fix my mind on You, Your character, Your promises, Your presence, and to trust You, that Your peace may guard me. Amen.
