Jesus reveals the purpose behind His teaching: that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. He is not a stern taskmaster aiming to make us miserable for our own good. His goal for us is joy, and not a thin, occasional joy, but a full one, His own joy taking up residence in us and overflowing. Whatever else the Christian life is, it is meant to be a joyful one, because it is life shared with a joyful Saviour.

Two things stand out. First, this joy is His joy, "that My joy may remain in you." We are not asked to drum up our own joy from nothing; we are invited to share in the deep, settled gladness of Jesus Himself. Second, it remains, it abides, it lasts, in contrast to the world's joys that flare and fade. This is joy with roots, joy that survives the night, because its source is unchanging.

If your joy has run thin, the answer is not to try harder to be happy but to draw nearer to the joyful Christ. His joy, shared, becomes yours, and full.

Take Into The Day

If your joy feels thin today, don't try to manufacture happiness. Instead draw near to Christ, through His Word, through prayer, and ask to share in His own joy. Let His joy, not your circumstances, fill you.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, Your desire is that Your joy would remain in me and that my joy would be full. When my joy runs thin, draw me near to You, its true source. Let me share in Your own deep gladness, and let it overflow in me today. Amen.
