The people were weeping. They had just heard the Law read and understood how far they had fallen, and their grief was real and even right. Yet Nehemiah tells them: do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. There is a time for godly sorrow, but it was not meant to be their resting place. Beneath and beyond their failure was a deeper reality, the joy of the Lord, and that joy was to be their strength.
Notice it is "the joy of the Lord," not merely cheerful feelings. This joy does not depend on circumstances going well, on our performance being adequate, or even on our mood. It is rooted in God Himself, in who He is and what He has done, and so it is available even on the days we have failed and feel the weakest. And it is strength: not a luxury for easy times but a power for hard ones. A joyless Christian is a weak Christian; the joy of the Lord steadies and fuels the soul.
When you feel weak today, do not first reach for more effort. Reach for the joy of the Lord.
Take Into The Day
When you feel weak or low today, deliberately turn your mind to one thing about God Himself that is true regardless of your circumstances, and let the joy of who He is become your strength for the moment.
Prayer
Lord, the joy of You is my strength. When I am weighed down by failure or weakness, lift my eyes from my circumstances to who You are. Let Your joy steady me and strengthen me, for it does not depend on my mood but on You. Amen.
