Fruit of the Spirit

Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

John's logic is simple and beautiful: if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. Christian love is always a response, never an origin. We do not love in order to earn God's love; we love because we have already been loved, lavishly, at infinite cost. The whole weight of our loving rests on that little phrase "so loved", pointing back to the cross, where the measure of God's love for us was set.

This order matters enormously. If we try to love others without first being grounded in God's love for us, our love becomes anxious and demanding, we love to be loved back, and grow bitter when we are not. But the one who is secure in being loved by God can love others freely, without needing anything in return, because the deepest need is already met. Loved people love people. Our capacity to love outward is fed by our certainty of being loved from above.

So feed your loving on this fact today: you are beloved. And from that fullness, love.

Take Into The Day

Ground your loving today in being loved. When tempted to love someone in order to get love back, stop and remember you are already God's beloved. From that security, love them freely, needing nothing in return.

Prayer

Lord, You so loved me, at the cost of Your Son. Let that settled certainty be the ground of all my loving. Free me from anxious, demanding love that needs to be repaid. Because I am beloved, let me love others freely today. Amen.
