The first flavour of the fruit is love, and Paul tells us exactly where it comes from. It is not squeezed out of us by guilt or worked up by effort; it is poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. The picture is of abundance, not a careful trickle we must ration, but a generous outpouring, God's own love flooding into the believer's heart by the Spirit He has given.
This is liberating for anyone who has tried, and failed, to love difficult people by sheer determination. You cannot give what you do not have. But the Christian is not asked to generate love from an empty tank; the Christian is a vessel into which God's own love has been poured. We love others not by manufacturing affection but by passing on what has first been poured into us. The love runs from God, through us, to others. Our part is to stay open, to keep receiving His love so that it overflows.
Before you try to love anyone today, receive again the love God has poured into you. Then let it overflow.
Take Into The Day
Before attempting to love a difficult person today, first sit and receive God's love poured into you. Then, full, let it overflow to them. You are passing on what you have received, not generating it from empty.
Prayer
Father, thank You that Your love has been poured into my heart by Your Spirit. I cannot love from an empty tank. Fill me again with Your love, and let it overflow through me to others today, especially to the one I find hard to love. Amen.
