I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

If the fruit is grown by the Spirit, how do we cooperate? Paul's answer is a single verb: walk. "Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh." Walking is not a one-off act but a continual, step-by-step movement, a thousand small choices to keep in step with the Spirit through the ordinary hours of a day. The fruit grows not in dramatic spiritual experiences but in this daily, unglamorous walking.
And notice the promise: the way to defeat the flesh is not mainly to fight it head-on but to walk in the Spirit. A garden overrun with weeds is not best cured by pulling weeds all day, but by cultivating healthy plants that crowd them out. So the cure for the works of the flesh is not endless self-focused struggle against them, but a positive, Spirit-led walk that leaves them no room. Fill the life with the Spirit, and the flesh is starved of soil.
You will face that choice many times today, to walk in the flesh or in the Spirit. Choose the next step in step with Him.
Take Into The Day
Treat today as a walk, made of single steps. At each small fork, a reaction, a choice, a temptation, consciously take the next step in step with the Spirit. Don't fight the flesh head-on; walk past it in Him.
Prayer
Lord, teach me to walk in the Spirit, not in dramatic leaps but in the thousand small steps of an ordinary day. Where the flesh pulls at me, lead me to take the next step in step with You, until there is no room left for it. Amen.
