praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance…

Paul ends his description of the armour of God not with another weapon but with prayer, and the language is comprehensive almost to the point of overflowing. Praying always, with all prayer and supplication, in the Spirit… with all perseverance. Note the repeated word: all. All occasions, all kinds of prayer, all perseverance, and (the verse goes on) for all the saints. Prayer is not one item on the list of the Christian life; it is the atmosphere in which all the rest is carried on.
That little phrase "in the Spirit" is the key to everything this month has touched. Prayer that is merely human effort soon flags. But prayer "in the Spirit" is prayer empowered and led by God Himself within us, the same Spirit who, as we saw, helps our weakness and intercedes for us. We do not pray alone; we pray in the Spirit, carried by God toward God. And it takes perseverance: prayer is the long, watchful, lifelong habit that holds everything else together.
As July closes, let prayer become not a task you complete but the air you breathe, always, in all things, in the Spirit. You have been laying down roots in the Word and in prayer. Keep them deep, and you will stand.
Take Into The Day
Make prayer the atmosphere of your whole day, not a single slot in it, praying in the Spirit through all that comes, with perseverance. Carry into August the roots you have put down this month, and keep them deep.
Prayer
Lord, teach me to pray always, in all things, in the Spirit, with perseverance. Let prayer be not a task I tick off but the air I breathe all day. Thank You for this month in Your Word and in prayer; keep my roots deep in You. Amen.
