The command lands like a hand on a restless shoulder: Be still. It comes, strikingly, in a psalm full of upheaval, the earth removed, the mountains carried into the sea, the nations raging. In the very middle of chaos, God says: be still. The stillness He calls for is not the absence of trouble around us, but a settled quiet within us, a ceasing from our frantic striving long enough to remember who He is.

And that is the point of the stillness: "be still, and know that I am God." Our restlessness so often springs from a kind of practical forgetting, we behave as though everything depends on us, as though if we do not fix it, it will not be fixed. The call to be still is a call to stop, to let go of the controls for a moment, and to remember that God is God and we are not. He is on the throne; the world does not rest on our shoulders; we can unclench. Real prayer often begins not with words but with this: a stilling of the soul before the God who reigns.

In the noise and rush of today, find a moment to be still, and to know again that He is God.

Take Into The Day

Take a deliberate pause today amid the noise, even a minute of stillness. Stop striving, unclench your grip, and quietly remember: God is God, and you are not. Let stillness be the beginning of your prayer.

Prayer

Lord, in the rush and noise, You say: be still, and know that I am God. Quiet my restless, striving soul. Help me to let go of the controls and remember that You reign, the world does not rest on me, and I can be still before You. Amen.
