The psalmist says it twice, as if he knows how hard it is to hear: Wait on the Lord… wait, I say, on the Lord. Waiting is perhaps the most difficult discipline in the praying life. We can pour out our requests readily enough; what tests us is the silence afterward, the long gap between the asking and the answer, when nothing seems to be happening and we are tempted to take matters into our own hands.

But biblical waiting is not passive idleness, twiddling our thumbs until God acts. It is an active, expectant, courageous waiting, "be of good courage," the verse says, a posture of trust that keeps looking to God, refusing both to panic and to give up. And there is a promise hidden in the waiting: "He shall strengthen your heart." The waiting itself is doing something in us; while we wait, God is at work, strengthening the very heart that struggles to wait. The delay we resent is part of the answer we need.

So when God seems slow, do not run ahead of Him. Wait, courageously, expectantly, and let Him strengthen your heart in the waiting.

Where you are tempted to run ahead of God and force an answer, choose instead to wait on Him today, actively, expectantly, with courage. Trust that He is strengthening your heart in the very delay.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to wait on You, not in passive idleness, but with courage and expectant trust. When You seem slow and I want to run ahead, hold me steady. Strengthen my heart in the waiting, and let me wait, indeed, on You. Amen.
