He Rose Early to Pray

The day before had been overwhelming. Mark tells us that the whole town had gathered at the door, that Jesus had healed many and cast out demons late into the evening. Anyone would have been exhausted, entitled to sleep in. Instead, a long while before daylight, Jesus rose, slipped out to a solitary place, and prayed. The busier and more demanding His ministry became, the more deliberately He guarded time alone with the Father.

There is a quiet rebuke and a great invitation in this. The rebuke: if the sinless Son of God, full of the Spirit, needed unhurried, early, solitary prayer to sustain Him, how much more do we, and yet we so often treat it as optional, the first thing sacrificed to a full day. The invitation: here is the secret of a life that pours out and does not run dry. Jesus' power before people flowed from His time with the Father in private. He gave out all day because He drew in before dawn.

You cannot pour from an empty vessel. Like your Lord, find a solitary place, and fill up there first.

Take Into The Day

Guard a slice of quiet at the start of your day for prayer, before the demands rush in, even a short while in a solitary place. Draw in from the Father first, so you have something to pour out all day.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, even You rose before dawn to seek the Father in a solitary place. Forgive me for treating prayer as the first thing I drop when busy. Teach me to fill up with You before I pour out to others. Meet me in the quiet. Amen.
