Romans 8:26
Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us…

Here is comfort for everyone who has ever felt that they cannot pray. Paul openly admits the weakness: "we do not know what we should pray for as we ought." Even the apostle did not always know what to ask. There are seasons when grief is too deep for words, when we are too confused to know what to request, when we kneel and find we have nothing to say. Paul does not scold us for this; he points us to help.
For "the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." When we cannot find the words, the Spirit prays within us and for us, carrying to the Father what our hearts cannot articulate. Your inarticulate sighs, your wordless tears, the prayer you cannot manage to pray, the Spirit takes them up and turns them into perfect intercession before the throne. This means there is no such thing as a prayer too broken to count. Even your inability to pray is met by God's own help.
So if you cannot pray today, come anyway, and let the Spirit pray in you. Your weakness is not a barrier; it is exactly where He helps.
Take Into The Day
If words fail you in prayer today, do not stay away. Come in your weakness, even in silence or tears, and trust that the Spirit is interceding within you. Let your inability be the very place He helps.
Prayer
Lord, I do not always know what to pray, and sometimes I have no words at all. Thank You that Your Spirit helps my weakness and intercedes within me with groanings too deep for words. Pray in me now what I cannot pray myself. Amen.
