This is one of the great prayer promises, but it is fenced on both sides by a condition, and the condition is everything. The promise, "you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you", rests entirely on two clauses: "if you abide in Me, and My words abide in you." Powerful, answered prayer is the fruit of a particular kind of life: a life rooted in Christ, soaked in His Word.
The logic is beautiful when you see it. As we abide in Jesus and His words sink into us, our desires are gradually reshaped by His. We begin to want what He wants, to ask what He would ask. So the promise is not a blank cheque handed to anyone who recites the right words; it is the natural overflow of a heart so joined to Christ that its prayers have come into harmony with His will. The deeper the abiding, the more our asking and His answering converge. This is also why the two halves of this month belong together: the Word abiding in us is what makes our prayer mighty.
Want answered prayer? Then abide. The asking follows the abiding.
Take Into The Day
Tend the abiding today, time in Christ, His words sinking into you, and let your asking flow from there. As His Word shapes your desires, watch your prayers come increasingly into harmony with His will.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me to abide in You and to let Your words abide in me. Reshape my desires by Your Word until what I ask is what You will. Make my prayer the overflow of a life rooted deeply in You. Amen.
