Fervent Prayer Avails Much

James wants us to know that prayer is not a polite ritual that changes nothing; it avails much, it accomplishes a great deal, it gets things done in the purposes of God. And he attaches two qualities to such prayer: it is "effective" and "fervent." Fervent prayer is prayer with heat in it, earnest, heartfelt, engaged, the opposite of the listless, half-asleep mumbling we sometimes offer. James then points to Elijah, "a man with a nature like ours," whose earnest prayer shut and opened the heavens. An ordinary man; an extraordinary effect; the difference was fervency.

This does not mean God answers the loudest or most emotional pray-ers, as though we could manipulate Him by intensity. It means God invites us to care, to lean in, to pray as if it matters, because it does. Listless prayer often reveals a heart that does not really believe anything will happen. Fervent prayer is the natural cry of a heart that truly expects God to act.

Bring some heat to your praying today. Pray like a person who believes God hears and acts.

Pick one thing you care about deeply and pray about it today with real fervency, not listless words, but earnest, engaged, heartfelt prayer. Pray as one who truly believes it avails much.

Lord, forgive my listless, half-hearted prayers that expect nothing. Give me the fervency of one who truly believes You hear and act. Like Elijah, a man like me, let my earnest prayer avail much in Your hands. Amen.
