The invitation here is striking in its freedom: pour out your heart before Him. Not present a tidy summary. Not offer the polished, acceptable version. Pour out, the whole of it, the mess and the ache and the confusion, emptied out before God like water from a jug. He can take the unedited truth of your heart, and He invites it.

Many of us pray a guarded prayer, telling God the things we think we are supposed to feel rather than the things we actually feel. But the psalms are full of raw, unguarded praying, grief, complaint, fear, even protest, poured out before God without first being made presentable. This is not irreverence; it is trust. To pour out your heart is to treat God as a refuge safe enough to hold your worst, your rawest, your most honest. The verse says exactly that: "God is a refuge for us." You do not need to clean yourself up before you come. You come to be held.

Stop editing your prayers. Pour out your heart to the God who is your refuge.

Take Into The Day

In prayer today, stop editing. Tell God the thing you actually feel, the fear, the anger, the ache, not the version you think you should feel. Pour out your heart to the refuge who can hold it.

Lord, You invite me to pour out my heart before You, and You are my refuge. So here it is, unedited, all that I actually feel. Thank You that I need not tidy myself before I come. Hold me, and be my refuge. Amen.
