Always Pray, Never Lose Heart

Luke tells us the very purpose of the parable Jesus is about to give: that we should always pray and not lose heart. The two are set against each other as opposites. The alternative to persistent prayer is not a different strategy; it is losing heart, giving up, growing discouraged, concluding that prayer makes no difference. Jesus knew the great temptation of the praying life is to quit when answers are slow.

In the parable, a persistent widow keeps coming to an unjust judge until he grants her request simply to be rid of her. Jesus' argument runs from the lesser to the greater: if even a corrupt judge will eventually answer persistence, how much more will your loving Father answer His children who cry to Him day and night? The point is not that we wear God down, but that we must not give up. Delays are not denials. The answer that tarries is not the answer refused.

So when you are tempted to stop praying about something because nothing seems to change, hear Jesus: always pray, and do not lose heart.

Take Into The Day

Take the request you have almost given up praying about, and bring it to God again today. Refuse to interpret delay as denial. Keep asking, and do not lose heart.

Prayer

Lord, You taught me always to pray and not to lose heart. Forgive me for the prayers I have abandoned because the answer was slow. I bring them again to You, my loving Father. Strengthen me to keep asking and not give up. Amen.
