But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place…

Jesus had just warned against praying to be seen by others, the showy public prayer that performs for an audience. His remedy is wonderfully practical: go into your room, shut the door, and pray to your Father in secret. Find a place where no one is watching, where there is no audience to impress, and there meet God alone. The shut door is not anti-social; it is the doorway to intimacy.
There is freedom in the secret place. With the door shut, there is no one to perform for, no need to find impressive words, no reputation to protect. You can be honest. You can be plain. You can pray badly and brokenly and it does not matter, because the only One listening already knows you completely and loves you anyway. Jesus adds that "your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly", the hidden prayer is never wasted; it is seen and answered by the One who matters most.
The health of your public Christian life is set in the secret place. Tend the room behind the shut door.
Take Into The Day
Find a private place today, a room, a parked car, a quiet corner, and pray there alone, with no audience. Drop the impressive words. Be honest with the Father who sees in secret.
Prayer
Father, behind the shut door, with no one to impress, I come to You. Free me from praying for an audience. Meet me in the secret place, where I can be honest and plain, and let my hidden life with You be real. Amen.
