Lord, Teach Us to Pray

The disciples had watched Jesus do many things, and Scripture does not record them asking Him to teach them to preach, or to heal, or to still storms. But after watching Him pray, they made one request: Lord, teach us to pray. Something in His praying was so compelling, so evidently the source of everything else, that they wanted it above all the rest. They sensed that His public power flowed from His private prayer.

There is humility in their request that we would do well to borrow. These were religious men who had prayed all their lives; yet they came as beginners, admitting they did not really know how. Prayer is like that. We never graduate from needing to be taught it. The most mature believer still prays as a learner, still says, in effect, "Lord, teach me." And the wonderful thing is that Jesus answered them, He did not rebuke the request but welcomed it, and gave them the pattern we now call the Lord's Prayer.

As we turn this month from the Word to prayer, come as they did, not as an expert, but as a learner.

Take Into The Day

Begin your praying today with the disciples' own request: "Lord, teach me to pray." Come as a learner, not an expert, and ask the Lord Himself to teach you. He welcomes that prayer.

Prayer

Lord, like Your first disciples, I come and ask: teach me to pray. I have prayed for years and still I am a beginner. Make my prayer life flow, as Yours did, from deep communion with the Father. Teach me, Lord. Amen.
